Egypt: the cry of a church under pressure
A two-day visit to Egypt by Pope Francis (28-29 April 2017) was arranged to bring a message of unity and give hope to the country’s Christians, still grieving after several church bombings. SAT-7 covered the visit, including a communion involving an expected 21,000 people, and a visit to the bombed St Peter and St Paul (“Botroseya”) church in Cairo.

The power of mothers
As Mother’s Day approaches with its e-cards, flowers, and dinners, we often think of our mothers. The commercials and ads can make it a difficult holiday for those who have lost their mothers, or those who struggle with a tumultuous relationship with their mothers. Their influence on our lives as women can be profound, whether good or bad. For mothers can be so much more than caregivers, family members and breadwinners. They were created by God to be leaders through their actions and words. “When she speaks her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26)

Turkey: the cry of isolated believers
These are difficult times for Christians in Turkey. The country has suffered an increase in terrorist attacks in major cities and been in an extended state of emergency following the attempted coup in July 2016. The far-reaching repercussions included mass sackings, arrests and the closure of hundreds of media outlets. The impact of the result of last month’s divisive referendum on constitutional changes to presidential powers remains to be seen.

Iran: the cry for meaning from young men
TACKLING DRUG ADDICTION Iran has the highest rate of drug addiction in the world, with at least 2 million Iranians in a population of 75 million addicted to illegal substances. Young men are at the centre of this phenomenon – with high unemployment, gender segregation and a ban on alcohol, drug use is seen as the only outlet for many. Drug dealing is also often seen as a way out of poverty, especially with a thriving heroin trade in neighbouring Afghanistan.
